Janelle’s Story

Janelle

On March 16, 2004, I was 14 years old when in the evening I was working on a science project and suddenly got flu like symptoms, vomiting, headache and an upset stomach. I was sick all night and reassured my mom that it was just flu and I would be fine to take part in the science fair that afternoon at school. I was still sick that afternoon and into that evening of March 17th I started to vomit up a black substance. My mom phoned the Health Line, where the nurse told her to take me to the … [Read more...]

Sarah’s Story

Sarah

My name is Sarah Davis, and I survived TSS when I was 15 years old. I will be 24 in March 2012. This is my story: May 2003: I started getting sick on a Sunday and felt a little worse on Monday. I didn't start getting really sick until Tuesday, when I started vomiting and having watery diarrhea. I also had a really high fever, probably around 102 degrees, and really bad chills. I thought I had the flu. It was really bad, and only getting worse. Wednesday I was still vomiting and couldn't eat. … [Read more...]

When I was a college student I decided to use tampons in conjunction with pantyliners. I had off and on issues with vaginal dryness but was too uncomfortable to talk about the issue with a physician. It was enough that I went to the gynecologist appointments. Only months later I had the scare of my life. It was like any day:  running late for classes, heavy flow, and general craziness.  I was hanging out with my sorority sisters and used the bathroom. I pulled the tampon out.  It looked a … [Read more...]

Katelyn’s Story

When I was 17, I almost lost my life from menstrual toxic shock from a tampon. My story begins on Sunday October 3, 2004 when I started my period.  Everything felt fine.  It was just my normal time of the month.  Then, on Tuesday October 5th, I began to feel like I was getting sick.  I remember complaining to my mom at dinner that my back was beginning to hurt like it does when I get sick.  That night, I did not sleep well. When my mom came in to check on me in the morning, I had a high … [Read more...]

Lauren’s Story

Lauren

A little over a year ago, I was one of the very lucky ones to survive Toxic Shock Syndrome.  It all began on Sunday, June 6, 2010 only a week after returning home from college for the summer.  Being 20 years old at the time, I never imagined myself getting so sick.  In the beginning of my sickness, I thought I had food poisoning or the flu. The symptoms were very similar and I never thought twice about it.  Hours went by and I was only getting worse.  I continued throwing up for about 8 … [Read more...]

Heather’s Story

Tuesday, March 29 2011, was just like any other weeknight at our house. At the time, I was 30 years old. I had just gotten my four babies tucked into bed for the night. We are the parents of four small children...twin boys, and two little girls. I had just given birth to my daughter four months before, and was recovering well from a c-section. I had been feeling pretty good until that night, when I noticed my palms were really itchy. No matter how much I scratched, they still itched like … [Read more...]
