TSS Awareness Campaign

There's no better way that I know of to raise awareness about an issue than to talk about it. And, talk about it. And, talk about it some more. The more conversations we have, the more comfortable we become. And, the more comfortable we become, the more open we are. And, the more open we are, the more we accept the need to change what is. And, the more we accept the need to change what is, the more apt we are to take action. And, action is what we need. What IS must … [Read more...]

My TSS Story by Jessica Evans

TSS Jessica Evans

My name is Jessica Evans and this Thanksgiving marks my 14th year of survival from TSS due to tampons. I was 17 years old when I became ill the day before Thanksgiving in 1999. It started with nothing more than a fever and nausea. Assuming that I had contracted the flu I rested up and drank plenty of fluids. Within 24 hours I was vomiting and lethargic along with a strange rash on my hands and feet. My mother was in Tennessee visiting my aunt for the holiday and I had stayed home with my … [Read more...]

Peyton’s Story

15 year old Peyton Caples fights TSS

I'm Peyton and I'm 15. This is my story. In June of this year (2013), I was admitted to ICU. I started feeling sick right when I used a tampon - not from having it in longer than you're supposed to. I started feeling really faint and nauseated, I could barely walk, but didn't think much of it because I was on steroids. On the third day I started feeling better so my friend came over.  I felt really sick when I stood up...like before.  My grandma called our doctor immediately and they … [Read more...]

The Life You Save Could Be Your Own

By Carolyn DeForest, Ph.D Not long ago, the fall of 2011, over the course of a few days, I became sick- almost debilitated - with a searing headache, nausea, and aches and pains in my neck and back that were unprecedented in my experience.  And, as if I didn’t feel bad enough, I was also on my period.  Yes, menstruating- bleeding like there was no tomorrow, I was aching and cramping and feeling out of sorts basically from head to toe. This went on for a few days. If you’ve ever had a period, … [Read more...]

Jennifer’s Story

My name is Jennifer Ritter.  I am 20 years old and from New Hampshire. My story begins on March 14, 2013. At the time, I was in my spring semester of my junior year of nursing school and had just come back from a spring break trip to Virginia Beach to visit my oldest sister. When I was visiting her I ran out of tampons and bought Super Plus tampons at the drug store, the highest absorbency I had ever used but I didn’t think twice about it. I had gone out with friends the night before my … [Read more...]

Kelly’s Story

My name is Kelly and I’m 29 years old.  My story began on December 18, 2005.  I woke up not feeling well, but just felt like I had the flu so I called in sick to work.  As day 2 came, I was feeling much worse, very dizzy, tired, throwing up, short of breath, my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest.  I was just nearing the end of my period that day, and I knew with the dizziness I was feeling it wasn't smart to drive so I called my cousin and asked her to pick up another … [Read more...]
